CALIFORNIA CIVIL RIGHTS PROTECTIONS

  •  DISCRIMINATION
It is illegal in California for a "business establishment" of "any kind whatsoever" to discriminate against anyone because of a person's sex, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, medical condition, marital status or sexual orientation.  That means that anyone in business cannot deny or refuse you services, refuse to contract with you, prevent you from utilizing the business and what it has to offer, or treat you differently solely on account of any characteristic mentioned above.

It is also illegal for anyone to discriminate in the sale or rental of housing based on age, with certain exceptions for senior citizen housing.

Moreover, it is illegal for a "business establishment" to discriminate against, boycott, blacklist, or refuse to engage in business with anyone just because of a person's characteristic as mentioned above, or a business entity's officers and directors characteristic as mentioned above.

If you have been discriminated against just because of a characteristic mentioned above, you may have a legal claim against the business establishment for damages.

  •  FREEDOM FROM VIOLENCE
Individuals in California have a statutory right to be free from violence, including intimidation by threats of violence because of your political affiliation, because you engaged in free speech, or just because of your protected characteristics as mentioned above.  If you are the victim of violence or threats of violence based on a characteristic mentioned above, you may be entitled to damages.

  •  SEXUAL HARASSMENT
All persons within California have the statutory right to be free from sexual harassment outside of the employment context.  If you have a business or professional relationship with anyone, including but not limited to doctors, lawyers, dentists, psychotherapist, teachers, real estate brokers or agents, bankers, building contractors, landlord or property managers, find yourself being sexually harassed by that person or other persons with an inability to get out of the relationship easily, you may be entitled to damages.
